    NPL Non-Profit Leadership Conference Recap

How Climate Change is Reshaping Nonprofit Work in Canada

Last month, we shared what we heard at the BC Non-Profit Leadership Conference after asking attendees how climate change has impacted their nonprofit organization.

Many told us that climate change isn't creating a separate set of social challenges - it's compounding the ones they are already working to address. A recent Future of Good article also told a similar story of how nonprofits are stepping up to support people impacted by this summer's wildfires and floods, often filling critical gaps in emergency response.

But while nonprofits continue to show up for communities affected by climate impacts, who's making sure nonprofits have the support they need to keep doing that work?

Are You Thinking About Accessibility When It Comes to Climate Resilience?

When a climate-related disaster impacts your community, are you asking yourself if everyone experiences that disaster the same way you do?

A recent article from the Canadian Climate Institute shares a personal story from writer Maria Shallard about her mother, who lives with Multiple Sclerosis, and the challenges that arise when emergency plans are built around the assumption that everyone can evacuate quickly, independently, and without additional support.

Her story highlights why climate resilience strategies or policies can't be built around a single idea of what a "typical" person needs during a disaster.

If you're working on a climate resilience project, have you considered how factors like mobility, communication, transportation, or access to support networks shape people's experiences? For example, can everyone access evacuation routes, receive emergency alerts, or leave safely if they don't drive or rely on a caregiver?

    Collaborative Leadership for Climate Action

Collaborative Leadership for Climate Action is a 4-week, online course that starts on Nov 02!

The course looks to nature to help us understand why intentional and relationship-centered collaborations matter in sustainability/climate work. We take a systems-view to examine how inequality and the climate crisis are connected and what that means for how we lead, work together, and create change.
